Dr. Mulder is an accomplished historian, educator, author, and independent professional photographer whose career reflects a lifelong commitment to learning, exploration, and creative expression. He earned a BA in European History from Kalamazoo College in 1973 and a PhD in History from The University of Chicago in 1984. Following his doctoral studies, he devoted 10 years to teaching history before transitioning into professional photography, a field he had cultivated as a personal passion since childhood.

Around 2010, after retiring from teaching, Dr. Mulder fully embraced photography as an independent professional. His area of expertise is reality-based photography, with a particular emphasis on wildlife, nature, people, and the authentic experiences encountered through travel. He deliberately avoids artificial intelligence in his photographic work, believing strongly in documenting real moments and preserving the integrity of what he sees through the camera. His extensive travels have taken him to approximately 20 countries, including seven countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Egypt, as well as destinations such as Tibet, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Chile, the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, and the Himalayas.

Dr. Mulder has combined his photographic talents with his writing abilities to produce numerous books. His creative works include The American West: Photography of Grand Canyon and Beyond (2025), Our World Revealed: A Journey Through Photographic Images and its revised edition (2025), In the Heart of Africa: An Expedition Into Nature’s Untouched Beauty (2023), and Capturing Wilderness: Exploring Nature’s Beauty Through Photography (2023). He also authored the history book The Alchemy of Revolution: Gerrard Winstanley’s Occultism and Seventeenth-Century English Communism, which received positive recognition from an Oxford professor.

Before becoming an independent photographer, Dr. Mulder worked with Church World Service, collaborating with its chief financial officer on refugee assistance programs and helping oversee the appropriate allocation of funds supporting refugee services, including operations in Nairobi. He continues to support this humanitarian mission as a donor.

A member of the Chicago Photography Group, Professional Photographers of America, the Sir Edmund Hillary Club, and the Grand Circle Cruise Line Inner Circle, Dr. Mulder attributes his success to resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. Looking ahead, he plans to continue traveling and pursuing photographic projects, particularly wildlife and adventure photography. His lifelong curiosity, dedication to authentic storytelling, and refusal to be discouraged by setbacks continue to shape his work and future endeavors.
